What to do if You Have an Accident

If you have an accident, here's a list of things to do:

  1. Stop your vehicle as quickly as possible, keeping safety in mind.
  2. Warn oncoming traffic by using your emergency flashers.
  3. Help the injured, but don't move them unless absolutely necessary.
  4. Call the local police or sheriff, or the state patrol.
  5. Don't talk about the accident to people other than authorities, such as the local police, sheriff or the state patrol. Don't sign any statements except for those requested by the authorities.
  6. Make an accident report to the police. If the police will not come to the accident scene, make sure you report it, even a hit-and-run.
  7. Report the accident to your insurance company.

  • Report your auto claim online for cars, trucks and SUVs (Glass-only claims should call 1-800-374-1111).
Deductible Information

Even if the accident is not your fault, any deductibles for applicable coverages will apply. However, when we attempt to recover the amount we have paid from the responsible party we will also attempt to recover your deductible(s).

If you receive a ticket for driving under the influence, you may be placed with a non-standard auto insurance company, and in turn, that may raise your rates. If you're already in a non-standard company, your premium may also increase, or your policy may be cancelled.

Coverage varies from state to state, so please check with your local American Family Insurance agent, for more information.
