Madison, Wis. (May 1, 2012) —American Family Insurance has already opened two drive-in locations and is looking to add more to inspect damaged cars from Saturday’s fierce hail storm in St. Louis and nearby areas.
American Family customers have filed 7,000 claims from the storm that dumped golf ball- to baseball-sized hail onto communities along Interstate 70 into Illinois along with winds that topped 70 mph. Approximately 4,100 of the claims are for auto damage and the remainder for damage to homes, businesses and farms. Additional claims are expected.
American Family customers who have claims should immediately contact the company's 24-hour Customer Care Center - 1-800-MY-AMFAM (692-6326) - to schedule an inspection of their damaged auto or property.
American Family has opened drive-ins to inspect damaged autos at 3440 Hollenberg Dr. in Bridgeton and 11705 Dorsett Road in Maryland Heights, additional locations will be opened soon. Vehicles are inspected by appointment only, which customers can schedule when reporting their claim. The drive-ins will operate seven days a week, with appointment times available from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Appointments will take approximately one hour to 90 minutes per vehicle to complete.
As part of its catastrophe response, American Family is activating dozens of adjusters, in addition to local employees who began inspecting the most severely damaged homes and autos on Sunday.

What damages to my property might be covered?
Your homeowners insurance policy covers wind and hail damage to your home and personal property. The "comprehensive" section of your auto insurance policy provides coverage for wind and hail damage to your vehicle.
Can I start to make repairs to prevent further damage?
You should protect your property immediately against further damage and theft. Use plywood, tarps or other materials to cover broken windows and damaged rooftops. Keep the receipts of any materials/services that you purchase to make these repairs so your adjuster can review them and reimburse you for expenses covered by your policy.
Who do I call to make repairs?
You are free to select any contractor or repair shop you wish. It is usually best to select one who has operated in the area for several years, is insured and bonded, and will give you a written guarantee for the work performed.
