Identity Theft Protection

Every year millions of people learn the hard way how easy it is for someone to steal their identity. With just your name, Social Security Number and date of birth, a thief can apply for anything from a credit card to a driver's license. And as bad as identity theft feels, the real crime may be how difficult, time consuming and expensive it can be to get your life back on track.

Fortunately, there's an easy and affordable way to arm your entire family against this rising threat:

The American Family Identity Theft Program includes our Identity Fraud Expense Coverage, which covers costs associated with repairing your identity, including attorney fees, loan application fees and lost wages.

What is the Identity Theft Program?
The program includes the American Family Identity Fraud Endorsement and fraud specialist assistance from Identity Theft 911. Together these resources provide simplified proactive and restoration identity fraud services; reimbursement of expenses; dedicated fraud specialists for resolution; proactive services to minimize the threat of fraud; and education tools.
Am I eligible?
Any new or existing personal or farm/ranch homeowners, renters, mobile homeowners or condominium owners are eligible. Along with the named insured being covered, the spouse and children are covered as long as they are residents of the household.
What is the cost?
The annual premium is $25.
Why do I need this coverage?
A Federal Trade Commission study found 9.9 million Americans were the victims of identity theft in 2008, and the number is rising. It takes an average 600 hours to recover from this crime.
What is covered?
Up to $25,000 coverage with a $250 deductible for expenses associated with identity restoration including: re-establishing your damaged credit and the process of repairing your name, legal fees, lost wages, certified mail and notarizing costs. What else can I do to protect myself from identity theft?

Here are just a few tips to help protect your identity.

  • Never toss credit card receipts into a public trash container. Instead, shred them at home.
  • Carry receipts in your wallet, not in your shopping bag.
  • If you expect a new or reissued credit or debit card in the mail and it doesn’t show up on time, contact the issuing company immediately.
  • Each month, carefully review your financial statements, bank statements and phone bills (including mobile phones) for unauthorized use.
  • Keep a list and/or photocopies of credit cards, bank accounts and investment accounts in a secure place (not in your wallet or purse). Include account numbers and phone numbers for customer service and fraud departments, so you can contact them quickly if cards are stolen or accounts are abused.
