Small Business Spotlight Series

Fueled by American Family’s commitment to dreamers, the Small Business Spotlight series highlights business owners across Wisconsin — honoring the dreamers who went above and beyond for their community last year.

Amilinda I Milwaukee, WI.

Born in Venezuela, Greg León always dreamed of owning his own Spanish and Portuguese cuisine-inspired restaurant in the United States. In 2013, he opened Amilinda as a pop-up before converting to a permanent home in downtown Milwaukee in 2015. Last spring, Greg and his friend, Reverend Karen Hagen, teamed up to launch “Hungry Hearts,” a community-based initiative to provide a nutrition meal to those in need while supporting small businesses. Every Saturday, different local restaurants provide 100 complimentary meals to the community and are granted $1,000 for their contribution. To date, this program has donated over 16,000 meals and raised over $192,000.

Ramone’s Ice Cream Parlor I Eau Claire, WI.

After enjoying ice cream while on vacation for their tenth wedding anniversary, Blayne and Kayla Midthun were inspired to pursue their dream of bringing their community together and making a difference. They pivoted and changed careers to open Ramone’s Ice Cream Parlor in their hometown of Eau Claire. Since opening in 2017, Ramone’s has donated over $80,000 to local charities through their “Cash for a Cause” initiative. In addition to donating over $20,000 in 2020 as part of this program, Ramone’s provided their award-winning ice cream to first responders as a token of appreciation for their bravery and sacrifices made during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Miss Molly’s Café I Milwaukee, WI.

Since she was eight years old, Molly Sullivan dreamed of owning her own café. In 2017, after five years of baking wedding cakes and deserts in her free time, she turned this dream into a reality by opening Miss Molly’s Café in Milwaukee. Through online donations, the neighborhood café provided thousands of boxed lunches to healthcare workers and first responders during some of the pandemic’s hardest months.

Clasen’s European Bakery I Middleton, WI.

In 1959, brothers Ralph and Ernst Clasen left their home in Germany to pursue their dream of opening a bakery in the United States. Three generations of Clasen’s later, the Middleton bakery is a local destination that serves 70 varieties of handmade treats. In June of 2020, Clasen’s supported its community by providing over 10,000 of their signature morning buns to healthcare workers and first responders.

Sassy Cow Creamery I Columbus, WI.

Raised on a Columbus farm that his grandfather originally purchased in 1946, James Baerwolf is a third-generation farmer. Today, he and his brother operate the 1,700-acre farm alongside their children. For over 70 years, the Baerwolf family has produced a variety of award-winning products, including milk, eggs, corn, soybeans and wheat. During some of the most challenging months of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sassy Cow Creamery, the farmstead store that sits on the property, created the “Kindness Cooler”. The fridge was consistently stocked with free milk and other dairy products for people in need.

Sally’s Sweet Shoppe I Genesee Depot & Delafield, WI.

With two locations across Waukesha Country, Tracey “Sally” Catarozoli continues to use her bakery as a platform to touch, move and inspire people with her work. Last year, Sally’s Sweet Shoppe created a neighborhood pantry. Located in a community that is in need of support, the “Free Little Food Pantry” provides food, healthcare items and other necessitates to those in need. It continues to be restocked on a regular basis by the funds raised through Sally’s “Keep the Change” jar, an ongoing initiative that donates money to local nonprofit organizations and other community-focused purposes.
