What Is KnowYourDrive?

KnowYourDrive is American Family Insurance’s usage-based insurance program that helps you take control of what you pay for your car insurance. How does it work? It’s simple — you’ll install a device in your car, the device tracks how great you drive (or not so great), and sends the info back to us. The safer you drive, the more you can save money on your car insurance premium.

Get started now and you’ll get an introductory 5% discount on your car insurance, and qualify for a program discount of up to 40%*. It’s our way of empowering you to drive safer and smarter.

Let’s take a closer look at how it works.

What Do You Need to Know?

  1. It’s simple! Connect with your American Family Insurance agent to get set up — they’ll walk you through everything you need to know.

You’ll receive your car adapter in the mail and depending on how you drive during the evaluation periods, you can earn program discounts of up to 40% on your car insurance!

  2. Nope. The KnowYourDrive device is designed to benefit you by helping you form smarter driving habits — which ultimately can save you money! Your discount can fluctuate over time depending on your driving behavior, but your premium will never go up based on how you drive with the program — and the lowest discount you can receive is 2%. It’s also important to remember there are multiple factors that impact your premium at renewal time, which can cause it to go up or down.
  3. In short, usage based insurance means “pay how you drive.” Thanks to a telematics* device, otherwise known as a car insurance tracker, installed in your vehicle, your car insurance company can monitor your driving habits, and if you’re a safe driver with good driving habits, you may earn a lower insurance premium.

*Telematics in insurance is a form of technology in your vehicle that can capture and process your driving data.
  4. For starters, we’ll send you an email containing a link to the KnowYourDrive Terms and Conditions which must be accepted within 10 days. You’ll also have to make sure you set up and activate your Automatic plug-in adapter within 28 days after receiving it. Next, you’ll need to drive during an evaluation period. KnowYourDrive will track your driving habits until your program discount of up to 40% is calculated and applied at an upcoming renewal.

In order to keep your program discount and remain enrolled in KnowYourDrive, please keep driving with the plug-in adapter activated in your car.

  5. In general, people that drive less and have safe driving habits get in fewer accidents and have fewer claims. Gathering this information allows American Family Insurance to identify drivers that deserve an additional discount due to their safe driving habits.

What we measure with a car insurance tracker: The KnowYourDrive device collects speed and location data similar to other GPS or mapping apps you may already use on your smartphone. Specifically, the device collects information about:

    • How fast you drive
    • How hard you accelerate or brake
    • Where you travel
    • When and how often you drive

    The device doesn't collect:

    • Your image or voice

Basically, the safer you drive, the more likely you’ll increase your eligibility for a higher program discount.

  6. KnowYourDrive is a voluntary program and you can stop participating at any time. You will no longer receive the program discount, but will not be penalized in any way.
  7. Who has access to customer driving data gathered in the program?

American Family Insurance, our device partner Automatic, and anyone that uses your smartphone can access your driving data. We protect the driving data shared through participation in this program with the same high standards with which all other private customer data are protected and secured.

Our device partner, Automatic, is the only on-board diagnostic (OBD) manufacturer that passed the Department of Homeland Security’s OBD vulnerability and risks study by Carnegie Mellon.

    Will my information be safe?

Keeping our customers’ personal information confidential is a top priority for all American Family Insurance employees, agents and staff. We will protect the data collected from KnowYourDrive, and will not share it unless we’re legally required to do so.

The company that houses your information uses industry-leading security practices like bank-level (128-bit AES) encryption on all data transmitted from the car device to your phone and up to the cloud so your information can’t be accessed maliciously. You can learn more by visiting our privacy policy.

Will you give my information to anyone else?

We won’t share your personally identifiable information, like name, where you drive, or VIN. However, we may be legally required to provide your data for an accident investigation or litigation purposes. Except in such situations, we will not disclose or use your device data to resolve claims, unless you request it.

How do I know the way you use the information won’t change?

The current KnowYourDrive program can only earn you a discount. We have no plans to offer a program that:

    • Surcharges for unsafe driving habits
    • Cancels your policy based on driving data
    • Determines fault in the case of an accident unless legally required
    • Increases premiums based on actual mileage driven
