The General celebrates 50 years in business and United Way gets the gift

Madison, Wis. (July 25, 2013) – Permanent General Companies, more commonly known as The General™, will celebrate 50 years in business on Friday, July 26.

To celebrate the milestone birthday, The General and its parent company, American Family Insurance, are jointly making a $10,000 corporate donation to the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville.

"The General has been a strong supporter of the United Way for many years," said The General's Chief Administrative Officer, David Hettinger. "Last year our employee campaign raised $50,000 and we felt it was a fitting tribute to celebrate this milestone."

The company employs approximately 750 people, with 400 at its Nashville headquarters and call center, and 350 at other locations, including call centers and claims offices in Cleveland and Phoenix, and a claims office in Tampa, Fla.

The General actively conducts business in 27 states, specializing in the non-standard insurance market. The company primarily sells its products through the Internet and call centers and in some states, independent agents and retail store alliances. The company reported $270 million in direct written premium in 2012.

The General was acquired by American Family Insurance on Jan. 1, 2013. More information about The General can be found at
