Pet Health Insurance

Pets make our homes and lives so much better when they're around. And we understand they're more than just pets - they're important members of your family. Just like your human family members, there might be times your pets get sick or needs medical attention. Pet health insurance helps you plan for these difficult times so you can lovingly care for your pet through all stages of life.

What Is Pet Insurance?

Pet health insurance is a type of health insurance just for pets that helps cover unexpected injuries and illnesses. It provides peace of mind to help you afford the care your pet needs when they're hurt or sick.

It can cover costs if your pet has an injury, faces a serious health problem. This can make health care for your pet more affordable, while helping keep them as healthy as possible so you can share a long and happy life together.

Why Get Pet Insurance?

Caring for a pet can be expensive. And if they get hurt or sick, the bills can add up quickly. The good news is that pet insurance can help you with these expenses! Pet health insurance helps you mitigate unexpected costs and manage vet bills so you're financially protected if something happens to your pet.

Some plans cost as little as $1 a day, but these prices can be affected by various factors, such as:

How Do I Apply for Pet Health Insurance?

It's easy to apply for pet health insurance! Before you fill out an application, make sure you have some information on hand, including:

  • Pet's name
  • Species
  • Gender
  • Breed
  • Age
  • Your address

During the application process, you can choose from several annual deductible options. The higher the deductible you choose, the lower your pet insurance payment will be. Then you can choose how much of your vet bill you want reimbursed. The lower the percentage, typically the less your insurance payment will be. Finally, you can choose your annual maximum, or the most the plan will pay in a year.

After you enroll, the insurance company could request your pet's medical records from your veterinarian's office.

When Will My Pet Be Covered?*

Policies have a 14-day waiting period for illness coverage and a two-day waiting period for accident coverage. For dogs, there's a six-month orthopedic waiting period (OWP) related to bones, joints, ligaments and more.

Once your waiting period has ended, your pet is covered. Rest assured coverage will be there when you need it.

You can also add additional pet insurance to your American Family homeowners policy. Different than pet health insurance, this coverage provides up to $1,000 for veterinarian bills or final expenses for a dog, cat, fish or bird as a result of a covered loss under your homeowners policy, such as a home fire.
