Break These 3 Rules to Achieve Your Dreams

Although a little bit of structure is good when it comes to planning out your future and working towards your goals, certain ‘rules’ can hold us back. Think about it, who says you have to go about your life a certain way? Who says following the rules is the recipe for success?

Jason Kotecki, founder of Escape Adulthood, has spent a good chunk of his life searching for ways to keep Adultitis from slowing him down — and he’s learned a thing or two along the way

Take a look at his advice for breaking these three rules, and be on your way to achieving the success you’ve always dreamed of! Remember, everything is impossible…until it’s not.

JASON KOTECKI: Hi, I'm Jason Kotecki of Escape Adulthood. And today, we're going to be talking about the three rules you should totally break if you want to achieve your dreams.

JASON KOTECKI:Interestingly enough, sometimes it's the rules that don't exist that hold us back the most. Here are three of the biggies.

    On screen:#1THOU SHALT BE REALISTIC

JASON KOTECKI:The first one, thou shalt be realistic. Think about this. How realistic do you think the townspeople thought the Wright brothers were when they were using all of their bicycle shop profits to create a flying machine? Be careful with what you deem realistic. After all, who's to say what's realistic? Keep in mind that things are impossible until they're not. And by the way, if your dream is realistic, it might not really be a dream. It might just be a to-do.

On screen:#2THOU SHALT HAVE A PLAN

JASON KOTECKI:Number two, thou shalt have a plan. You don't need a business plan to start a business. You might need a business plan to get money for your business, but you don't need it to start. It can be dangerous to be over-reliant on a plan. It's hard to launch in something new, something that might not work. It's a lot easier to hide in the data and the details of a plan. Plans are good, but action is better.

On screen:#3THOU SHALT LET OTHERS DEFINE THY SUCCESS

JASON KOTECKI: The third one, thou shalt let others define thy success. If I want to improve my golf game, does it really makes sense for me to take free throw shooting lessons from a professional basketball player? Of course not. What I want to know is, why do we spend any time comparing our success against people who are playing a different game? You get to decide what success means for you.

JASON KOTECKI: First, decide what game you're playing. Two, play that game as well as you possibly can. And number three, don't get distracted by people who are playing a different game.

JASON KOTECKI: If you want to achieve your dreams, you're probably going to have to break a few so-called rules along the way.
