The Power of Putting Your Dreams in Writing

Whether you’ve just begun to explore a new dream or have been pursuing a lifelong passion for some time now, it’s always a great idea to put your goals into writing. Simply designating a notebook and putting pen to paper can be a really powerful thing, believe it or not! And, although it may seem like an elementary concept, it’s a truly helpful tool when it comes to actually achieving what you set out to — vs. keeping your dreams locked away in your head, never to be realized.

Not convinced? Here are just some of the ways actually writing down your goals can make a big impact.

It brings your dream to life. Seeing the dream you’ve been contemplating written down in black and white is quite enlightening, and, in a way, it brings your dream to life — it turns it from being just an idea into your new, realistic reality!

It leads to clarification. A lot of us have big-picture dreams laid out in our minds, and while it’s great to dream big, it can be a bit difficult to put those kind of goals into action. So, no matter how clear of a vision you think you have, write it down and start to flesh out the details of what this dream means to you, what the milestones are along the way, how you’ll actually achieve it, etc. Seeing all the details written out can help you decide exactly where to begin and if this is truly the path you want to follow.

It can be a motivator. Writing down your dream and displaying it somewhere you’d see it every day — like taped to your fridge or tacked up next to your desk — will help you keep your goals top-of-mind. It’s a great way to stay motivated and hold yourself accountable for what you’ve set out to do. No excuses!

It’s a good habit to start. Beyond writing down your initial dream and the ideas you have around how you’ll achieve it, it’s always good to follow up and record your milestones, your setbacks, your new ideas and the overall evolution of your goals. Documenting your experiences along the way will allow you to keep track of your progress and enable you look back on things that worked and didn’t work for you.
