6 Tips for Pulling Yourself Out of a Rut

Doubt, busyness, uncertainty, a lack of inspiration — these are all too common roadblocks we run into when pursuing a dream. And, no matter how much passion you’ve got for your life’s goals, you’re certain to find yourself in a rut on occasion, because sometimes it can just feel easier to throw in the towel and walk away. But don’t get discouraged! You’ve got what it takes to get yourself back on the path to success.

Take these steps to reinvigorate your passions and dig yourself out of this slump. Because when it comes down to it, your dreams are what makes life great.

Get Back to the Roots

What inspired you to pursue your dream in the first place? What sparked your passion? When the going gets tough, it can be really helpful to revisit these key factors and remind yourself of why it’s all worth it. Dream of opening a craft store? Do a little side DIY project, no agenda attached. Working towards a big promotion? Revisit some of that work that kicked off your career. Whatever it takes for you to find that passion again.

Take Small Steps

Repeatedly holding yourself to big tasks can be extremely daunting, so it’s best to work on a more manageable scale. Approach your goal with realistic and actionable steps and set out to accomplish something small each day — don’t burden your to-do lists with the impossible. After all, small wins add up to great accomplishments.

Gain Some Distance

Whether it’s spending a weekend away or simply clearing your schedule of everything goal-related for a day or two, it’s smart to take a step back every once in a while — especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed. After all, getting some distance will re-energize you and may even help you gain some clarity around your dream, making the path forward more obvious and exciting than ever.

Go for Self-improvement

Sometimes we get in a dream rut because we simply don’t have the knowledge or skills to move forward quite yet. But that’s no reason to quit ! Remember, a dream is a journey, not a destination, so it’s only natural to have to step out of your comfort zone and learn from time to time. Take a class, do some research or ask others to help you master a new skill. You’ll be ready to tackle the next step in your pursuit in no time! Plus you’ll come out the other side an even stronger individual — not a bad deal.

Talk it Out

If you’re struggling with what to do next or are frustrated with recent progress (or lack thereof), it may be helpful to talk to those close to you. Venting is a good way to alleviate some of the pressure you’re feeling and odds are your friends and family will have some good advice to help you through your slump.

Learn from Your Failures

Failure — it’s the biggest obstacle any of us face when it comes to pursuing a dream. The fear of it can cause a sense of doubt and uncertainty, and when it happens it can really put us in a funk. But nothing worth doing is ever easy! You’re bound to fail in some way along the line, and that’s okay. Learn from your mistakes and make your next attempt even better.

You can fall into a rut for many different reasons, but the key to bouncing back is being mindful of what obstacles you face and taking the right steps to overcome them. You started pursuing this dream for a reason, and you’ve got what it takes to continue! Just keep these tips in your back pocket and pull them out when you need a little boost.
