No matter your end goal, pursuing a dream is a big task, and it takes time to truly succeed. But that doesn’t mean we have to save the celebrations for the very end!
Of course keeping the big picture in mind is important, but all too often dreamers get caught up in the long-term and forget to enjoy all the little successes along the way. Remember, pursuing a dream is a journey, not a destination. And, believe it or not, taking time to revel in your small achievements can only help in keeping you on track!
So, instead of jumping from one project to the next or just drilling through your to-do list, pause and take a second to enjoy life. Here are some tips to help you shift your mindset.
Toot your own horn
This is something many struggle with. But guess what? It’s okay to be proud of yourself! If you’ve taken a big step towards achieving your dream, let the world know. Write a blog post, upload a video, tell your friends over dinner — do something to celebrate yourself. Odds are the outpouring of support will give you the motivation to keep on going.
If you’re more comfortable going the quiet route (or both), that’s fine, too. Treat yourself every once in a while with your favorite dessert, an extra hour of sleep or a new outfit! Whatever you need to put a smile on your face and keep your mind set on pursuing your dream. You’d be surprised at the difference it makes.
Observe silly holidays
National taco day, rubber ducky day, grilled cheese appreciation month — you name it, there’s probably a proclaimed “holiday” for it. And as silly as it may seem, it’s fun to celebrate those obscure days from time to time. So take a peek at your calendar and go all out. Because why not?
Break your routine
We’re creatures of habit and, for most of us, that means work, eat, sleep, repeat. Which can actually get pretty draining. So break out of your routine every once in a while and see how it affects your mood and drive. Take a day off work, get away for a weekend, go somewhere new for lunch, etc.
When we lift other people up and make it a point to celebrate their successes, that positivity has a way of rubbing off on us as well. Did your friend reach a new milestone in their dream? Take them out to lunch to celebrate. Is your sister having a baby? Throw her a party! Showing your support goes a long way for all involved.
Celebration isn’t always a grand gesture or party — it can simply be a way of thinking. So take time every day to think about your accomplishments and congratulate yourself for sticking to the journey. Whether you reflect using a journal or indulge in self-affirmations before bed, it’s all about remaining grateful and believing in yourself. Because you’ve got this.
So, no matter what dream you’re pursuing, remember you’re only doing yourself a favor when you stop and enjoy life. Take on these little celebrations and discover a new source of motivation — you’ve earned it.
